Syllabus (or programme)

 

1. The epic in the Golden Age. The historical epic: from Ercilla to Lope de Vega. The religious and burlesque epic.


2. From the new romancero to neopopularism. Themes and forms of the new romancero. Tradition, transmission and creation of romance. Two examples: La tierra de Alvargonzález by Antonio Machado and Romancero Gitano, by García Lorca.


3. Narrative poetic forms in the 18th and 19th centuries. Didactic poetry. Fables. From Iriarte to Hartzenbusch. Romantic narrative poetry. The Duke of Rivas and Espronceda.


4. American independence and the new epic. From Martín Fierro by José Hernández to Canto general by Pablo Neruda. Other examples.
